Antiphospholipid antibodies and venous thromboembolism.

The clinical relevance of antiphospholipid antibodies (APLA) in patients without systemic lupus erythematosus who have venous thromboembolism (VTE) in unknown. Limited evidence suggests that there is an association between the presence of APLA and both initial and recurrent episodes of VTE and that patients with APLA and VTE are resistant to warfarin therapy. Unselected patients with a first ep...

Solid cancer, antiphospholipid antibodies, and venous thromboembolism.

The pathogenic role of antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL) in the development of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in patients with malignancies has not been established. From May 2006 to April 2008, 258 consecutive patients with solid-organ malignancies who developed VTE (VTE+) were recruited. A group of 142 patients matched for age, sex and tumor type cancer patients without VTE (VTE-) and an age-an...

Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis and antiphospholipid antibodies.

We report two cases of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis associated with an antibody to phospholipids, namely the lupus anticoagulant. Both patients later developed further immunologically mediated conditions. The importance of screening for the lupus anticoagulant in addition to anticardiolipin antibodies in this condition and the need for follow-up of such patients is discussed.

Recurrent Deep Vein Thrombosis After the First Venous Thromboembolism Event: A Single-Institution Experience

BACKGROUND We investigated the frequency, clinical presentation, risk factors, and outcome after the first deep vein thrombosis (DVT) event. MATERIAL AND METHODS A retrospective study was conducted for patients with DVT between 2008 and 2012 with a 1-year follow-up. Patients were divided into 2 groups: single vs. recurrent DVT (RDVT). RESULTS Of the 6420 patients screened for DVT, 662 (10.3%) h...
